The jostaberry is a fruiting shrub, a hybrid between the blackcurrant, the North American coastal black gooseberry, and the European gooseberry.

Jostaberries are known for their dark purple to black, slightly tart berries, which resemble large blackcurrants in flavour and appearance. They are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants.

The plant itself is thornless, cold-hardy, and disease-resistant, especially to powdery mildew and gooseberry mildew. Jostaberries can be eaten fresh or used in jams, jellies, juices, and desserts. The plant thrives in full sun to partial shade and is best grown in well-drained soil.
