The Early Jiro persimmon is a compact, self-fertile variety of Japanese persimmon, valued for its crisp, sweet fruit and reliable performance in milder climates.
This non-astringent type ripens in mid to late October, making it an excellent choice for growers in British Columbia and other regions with a shorter fall.
Early Jiro persimmon fruit are medium-sized, squat and flat-bottomed, with smooth orange skin and a mild, honeyed flavour that’s perfect for fresh eating.
The tree itself reaches 10 to 15 feet tall, with a naturally well-branched, rounded form that makes it easy to manage and ideal for smaller spaces or home orchards.
Hardy to Zone 7, Early Jiro thrives in sunny, sheltered locations and needs little care once established.
With beautiful fall foliage and delicious fruit you can enjoy straight from the tree, Early Jiro is a rewarding and ornamental addition to any edible landscape.
For those who have seen the West Coast Plants demonstration food garden, the tree growing in the very centre of the garden is an Early Jiro persimmon.
