Variety and Size

Early Golden plum trees feature white blossoms followed by very sweet, yellow plums with a red blush that ripen in July, two weeks ahead of Shiro. Though genetically a Japanese plum, which originate from China, this particular variety was found as a chance seedling in Fonthill, Ontario and is now the most widely grown yellow plum in that province.

Early Golden plum trees produce very heavy yields of freestone plums that are excellent eaten fresh or preserved. Thinning the fruit is often required for consistent harvests, or the tree may overbear one year and recover the next.

Early Golden plum trees are vigorous and have low susceptibility to black knot, a common fungal issue in wet environments like the B.C. coast. These trees are on semi-dwarf rootstock and will reach 12' tall, though they can be kept smaller with pruning. Prune plums trees in the summer to allow cuts to heal quickly in warm, dry weather.

Early Golden Japanese plum trees require cross-pollination with another variety of early-flowering Japanese plum, like Shiro. They will not cross-pollinate with European plums.
