'Shiro' Japanese Plum Trees
'Shiro' Japanese Plum Trees
Shiro Japanese plum trees produce heavy yields of sweet, yellow, oval plums with clingstone flesh that is very juicy and low in acidity. Shiro plums are excellent enjoyed fresh or preserved, and will keep longer than most other varieties, with fruit lasting 2 - 4 weeks after harvest.
Though genetically a Japanese plum, this variety was actually bred by famous plant breeder Luther Burbank in California in 1899. Many consider Shiro plum trees to be the best yellow plum cultivar available.
These trees are on semi-dwarf rootstock and will reach 12' tall, though they can be kept smaller with pruning. Prune plums trees in the summer to allow cuts to heal quickly in warm, dry weather.
Shiro Japanese plum trees are partially self-pollinating, but cross-pollination with another variety of early-flowering Japanese plum, like Early Golden, is recommended. They will not cross-pollinate with European plums.
