The Nijisseiki Asian Pear, also known as the 20th Century pear, is one of the most famous and widely grown Asian pears in the world. Discovered as a seedling in Japan around 1900, Nijisseiki quickly earned its place as the defining pear of the 20th century and remains highly prized for its unique qualities.
Nijisseiki bears medium-sized, round fruits with smooth, bright yellow-green skin. Unlike many Asian pears, Nijisseiki pears are not russeted, giving them a clean, luminous appearance. The flesh is crisp, *extremely* juicy, and delicately sweet, with a refreshing flavour often described as light and floral.
Nijisseiki pears are perfect for fresh eating, slicing into fruit salads, pairing with cheeses, or juicing They also store well, keeping their texture for 2-3 months under refrigeration.
Nijisseiki is one of the most famous Asian pears worldwide and helped popularize Asian pears outside Japan, and it is the variety most commonly found in Canadian grocery stores.
Asian pears are attractive trees with dark green, shiny leaves and a growth habit that is more open than tight, upright European pears. Asian pears ripen on the tree and are ready to harvest in late summer to early fall.
