Not all blackberries have thorns! Many new varieties with large, juicy berries are well suited for the home garden or market garden. Thornless canes make tending and picking pain free.
'Triple Crown' Thornless Blackberry: A newer blackberry variety known for its flavour, productivity and vigour. The fruit are large and juicy and have a good sweet-tart balance. This cultivar has a semi-erect growth habit and can be grown as a shrub without support. Grows 6' tall by 2-3' wide. Zone 5. Bred by the US Dept of Agriculture and released in 1998. Harvest early to midseason. Fruits on last year's canes (floricanes). Self-pollinating. Full sun to part sun.
'Black Satin' Thornless Blackberry: Sweet and juicy. Heat tolerant. Excellent fresh or preserved. Medium-large berries. Midseason. Vigorous and disease resistant. Upright, spreading growth habit. Grows 5-6' tall. Zone 5. Pink flowers. Fruits on last year's canes (floricanes). Self-pollinating. Full sun to part sun.
