The Northland blueberry is a hardy, half-high blueberry variety known for its excellent cold tolerance and abundant, flavourful fruit.
The variety Northland is a cross between a lowbush blueberry and a highbush blueberry. It gets it's cold tolerance from the lowbush and berry size from highbush. Generally, half-high blueberries grow to half the height of highbush blueberries, which are the most common in home gardens.
Northland is a compact bush, growing about 3 to 4 feet tall, with a spreading growth habit. Its small size makes it suitable for both food gardens and containers.
The berries are medium-sized, dark blue, and have a sweet, wild blueberry flavour. Northland is known for producing a heavy crop of berries, often yielding up to 20 pounds of fruit per mature plant.
The berries ripen midseason, usually in July, and are ideal for fresh eating, baking, or freezing.
Northland blueberries can withstand extremely cold temperatures -34°C (-30ºF), making them an ideal choice for northern gardens and colder regions.
Blueberries like acidic soil with good drainage, so prepare and amend your planting location ahead of time, if possible. We sell an organic soil acidifier that can be added to your soil to gradually reduce the pH.
Be sure to see our blog post: Why Blueberries Need Acidic Soil to Thrive.
Northland blueberries can be self-pollinated, but will produce more fruit and larger fruit if pollinated by a different variety.
