'Montmorency' Sour Cherry Trees
'Montmorency' Sour Cherry Trees
The Montmorency sour cherry, or Montmorency tart cherry, is the most popular pie and dessert cherry in North America. Sour cherries hold their flavour through cooking, making them ideal for baking and preserves, and the traditional choice for cherry pie.
Semi-dwarf Montmorency cherry trees grow 12-15 feet tall, with a rounded habit and upright branches. The trees are covered in white blossoms in the spring, followed by heavy crops of bright red cherries in late June and early July. Montmorency cherries are medium to large in size, have yellow flesh, clear juice and are very rich, tangy and juicy.
Unlike the Romance series of dwarf hardy sour cherries we carry, the Montmorency sour cherry has less sugar and is a bit too tart to enjoy fresh, but its uses in baking and preserves are endless. Products that contain sour cherries almost always use this variety, which has been cultivated for over 400 years.
