Our Favourite Garden Trellis Idea

We've outlined The Benefits of Using Trellises in the Garden, so now it's time to share our favourite trellis idea. Wrap sturdy fencing in a circle and you have an instant, portable trellis, which can be used anywhere in the garden.

Fencing

  • Galvanized, welded wire (not wrapped)
  • 5' tall
  • 4"x4" openings (squares)

Instructions

  • Use metal cutters to cut a section of fence that's 5' tall and 56" long.
  • Bend it lengthwise into a circle, overlapping the last column of squares.
  • Secure the overlapping squares with metal clips.
    • We use a Hog Nail Ring Pliers Kit (sponsored link*). They are very easy to use and don't require a lot of strength.
  • Once your trellis tower is complete, position it in your chosen location and insert garden stakes, one on each side. Tie the trellis to the stakes to prevent it from blowing over in the wind.

These trellises are incredibly sturdy and can be used for tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, melons, beans, peas or anything else you'd like to grow vertically. They do not rust and can be moved easily from one location to another, making garden planning and crop rotation simple.
